PASSAU – The Three-River-City

With its beautiful city centre and surrounding landscape, Passau is one of the most breathtaking and fascinating cities in Germany. Passau is called the Three-River-City because it is located at the confluence of Danube (from the west), Ilz (from the north) and Inn (from the south) which form the so called Tree-Rivers-Corner. Together they continue to flow eastward as Danube.

Passau has been a Bavarian city for over 200 years now. It is located directly on the border with Austria. The name Passau is derived from the Roman fortification “Batavis”. In the 8th century, Passau became an Episcopal seat and from the 13th century on for more than 600 years an independent prince bishopric. Today more than 50.000 inhabitants live in Passau. For four decades, Passau has been developing into an important administration, business and culture centre in Eastern Bavaria and since 1993 it has become a regional centre based on the fact that the University of Passau was founded in 1978.

Historical sites

In the Old Town of Passau you can find picturesque squares, romantic promenades and enchanting alleys. Majestically, the fortress “Veste Oberhaus” and the church “Maria Hilf” throne high above the city.

Thanks to its ideal location on three rivers, Passau is a paradise for hikers and bicyclists. The city is connected to several hiking and biking paths such as the Danube Cycle Path (Passau-Vienna) or the Inn-Salzach Cycle Path (Passau-Salzburg-Tauern and Passau-Innquelle (CH)).

Culture life

The cultural life in Passau is rich and diverse. The City Theatre Passau was once the Episcopalian Opera and is today the venue of the Regional Theatre Lower Bavaria. Over 15 plays are premiered each season. Furthermore the “ScharfrichterHaus Passau” is well-known for its cabaret.

Each year in June or July, Passau’s Art Night takes place in the Old Town. The motto is: „Touching and Experiencing Art“.

Passau used to be Episcopal residence and important trading town. Therefor it was the ideal place for all arts to be developed. Passau’s glory as a center of culture and arts is expressed by the “Nibelungenlied“, the gothic cathedral, the baroque reconstruction of the city after the fires of 1662/80, the painters Wolf Huber and Ferdinand Wagner or the writers Adalbert Stifter and Hans Carossa.

Adventure ideas

One of the highlights of a holiday in Passau is a boat trip on the Danube, especially with the Swarovski Crystal Ship or the Cabrio Ship.

If you’re looking for action, fun, and adventures, the authentic western town “Pullman City” or the nature path “Baumkronenweg” in Kopfing might interest you.

In case of bad weather, we recommend the indoor playground “Babalu” in Passau/Heining,  the Oberhaus Museum or the Cineplex cinema centre.

Another beautiful destination for families is “Gut Aiderbichl”, which gives over 300 rescued animals a home.

Passau’s aqua center “peb” is opened all year and therefore always a good destination for families.

You can also find nice children’s playgrounds near the Inn promenade and the Three-Rivers-Corner.

There are a lot of different fun activities for families that make your holiday in Passau exciting and fun! If you tell us what you would like to do on your holiday in Passau we will give you more information and suggestions on activities and attractions right for you and your family.
